More than 120 victims of Dr Death are talking with competing law firms in the chase for financial compensation following botched operations.
Leading the pack is Carter Capner which was retained by a victim support group in Bundaberg that now totals more than 100 people.
The Brisbane-based firm is seeking compensation for “medical complications caused by maladministration and medical incompetence practiced at the hospital from 2003”.
Shine Roche McGowan has had up to 17 inquiries while Slate & Gordon is responding to two.
It is unknown how many victims or their surviving relatives have contracts with private firms.
Carter Capner partner Ian Brown yesterday said 12 of his clients desperately needed corrective surgery, including Hans Huhsmann, a man who had a syringe left in his stomach.
He also wants the State Government to waive any time limits on claims and to meet the cost of independent medical examinations by suitably qualified doctors that patients were able to organise.
“The patients are confused about who they are supposed to be reporting to, whether it be the medical review panel, the Health Rights Commission, the new surgical team, the acting director of medical services, or the hotline to the medical board,” Mr Brown said.
Mr Brown sent a letter to Bundaberg Hospital acting director of medical services Michael Daly early yesterday asking him not to miss the opportunity of hearing the patients’ stories at a victims support group tomorrow night.
