Australians are being urged to carefully review their travel insurance policies to avoid being caught out by hidden exclusions. Legal expert Peter Carter of Carter Capner Law said insurers often conceal ambiguous clauses in the fine print, making claims harder to secure.
“Insurers are in the business of claim denial. It’s part of their business model,” Carter said, noting that incidents involving alcohol, motorbikes, or jet skis are often categorised as high-risk activities to justify rejecting claims.
He advised travellers that in serious injury cases, they may have to pursue legal compensation after returning home. “You’ll have better prospects if this involves an Australian company rather than a small overseas outlet,” he added.
Carter warned that injuries sustained overseas can have long-term consequences: “When they return, life may not be the same if the injury affects their employment or way of life.”
