Australians could be at risk of missing out on payouts while overseas due to hidden exclusions in travel insurance policies. Legal expert Peter Carter of Carter Capner Law said insurers often conceal ambiguous clauses in the fine print, which are not always made clear to customers.
“Insurers are in the business of claim denial. It’s part of their business model,” Carter warned, noting that activities such as drinking alcohol, riding motorbikes, or using jet skis are frequently categorised as “high-risk” to help deny claims.
He added that in serious injury cases, travellers may have to seek legal compensation upon returning to Australia. “You’ll have better prospects if this involves an Australian company rather than a small overseas provider,” Carter explained.
The warning comes after several recent incidents involving Australians abroad, including tourists narrowly escaping a sinking boat in Bali that killed three people.
Carter reminded Australians of the long-term consequences of injuries sustained overseas: “When they return, life may not be the same if the injury affects their employment or way of life.”
