Australian travellers are being urged to scrutinise their travel insurance policies, with legal expert Peter Carter of Carter Capner Law warning that hidden exclusions could block payouts. Policies often classify riding motorbikes or jet skis and consuming alcohol as high-risk, meaning claims may be rejected if accidents occur during these activities.
Carter said restrictions are often buried in policy wording, leaving travellers unaware. “To receive compensation needed to cover serious injury and ongoing expenses, you may have to seek legal compensation upon your return — and prospects are better if bookings involve an Australian company,” he explained.
Rabies Claims in Bali on the Rise
The warning comes as rabies-related travel insurance claims surge in Bali. Zoom Travel Insurance noted increased cases, mostly dog bites in high-risk zones like south Kuta and Mengwi. Treatment can cost up to $10,000, with limited access in rural areas sometimes requiring relocation.
Other animal-related incidents, such as monkey bites at tourist attractions, are also increasing. NSW Health reported 145 Australians hospitalised from animal-related injuries in 2023.
Insurers like Zoom and Southern Cross attribute the rise in claims to booming visitor numbers to Indonesia. Comprehensive insurance, timely treatment, and 24-hour assistance services remain critical for protection.
