A unique charity foundation is in danger of giving lawyers a good name.
The Peter Yeo Point 05 Spinal and Medical Research Fund has so far seen five CBD legal firms unite to help patients buy basic items like wheelchairs, emergency devices and internet connections.
The foundation was established by, and is named after, former Australian Rules Football star Yeo who became a paraplegic in 2002 after he slipped on the floor while running to answer his mobile phone at home.
Committee member Jim Grevell said there was no other foundation like it in the world as it was lawyers helping people who didn’t have a legal claim.
“It’s a novelty for a start because lawyers are all bastards and sharks,,” Mr Grevell joked.
“Lawyers think in terms of tens of thousands of dollars. But we’ve changed lives with just a few thousand dollars buying computers and microwaves.”
The foundation recently gave $6000 to paraplegic Brittany Young, 16, for an inhome elevator and modified shower.
Mum Jayne Young said the new facilities had given Brittany the full run of their home and meant she was no longer at risk of having to go into a care facility.
“It’s given her the self-esteem to pick herself up and fight,” Mrs Young said.
Mr Grevell hopes to receive approval next month from the Australian Lawyers Alliance to take the foundation national.
Legal firms contributing to the fund so far are Shine Lawyers, Carter & Capner, Bennett & Philp, Mullinf Lawyers and Grevell.
