Introduction
Carnival Magic, while hosting the ShipRocked cruise, faced adverse weather conditions upon its arrival at Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on February 6, 2024. The ship encountered strong winds and swells, leading to a collision with the pier fender, causing it to collapse. This incident resulted in significant damage to both the ship’s hull and the pier structure. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
Details of the Incident
Due to unexpected adverse weather, the Carnival Magic arrived in Ocho Rios ahead of schedule. Captain La Farina, the ship’s master, promptly informed the guests onboard about the situation. The ship was scheduled to remain in Ocho Rios until 5:00 PM on Wednesday, February 7. Following the collision, Captain La Farina issued a notification emphasizing the ship’s safety and the operational status of hotel services, while some services were temporarily closed as a precaution.
Operational Context
In response to the incident, efforts were immediately initiated to coordinate with local partners and the Fleet Operations Center, aiming to safely reunite stranded passengers with the ship. The Carnival Magic has since moved to the open sea to ensure safety while damage assessments are conducted. Updates on plans to facilitate the passengers’ return and the extent of the damage are being communicated as they become available.
