Introduction
The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a medical evacuation of a 32-year-old man from Holland America Line’s ms Zaandam cruise ship on November 26, 2024. The medevac took place approximately 50 miles off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, after the man exhibited symptoms consistent with a stroke.

Details of the Incident
The ship’s doctor contacted the Coast Guard on Monday morning when the ms Zaandam was about 330 miles northeast of Oahu. After consulting with a USCG flight surgeon, it was determined that a medevac was necessary. Early Tuesday morning, a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a C-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Barbers Point were dispatched to the ship’s location. The helicopter crew hoisted the patient and a nurse from the ship, providing medical attention during the transfer to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. The man arrived at the hospital in stable condition.

Operational Context
The ms Zaandam was on a 17-day roundtrip voyage to Hawaii, having departed from San Diego, California, on November 20th. It is scheduled to return to San Diego on December 7th. It has not been disclosed whether the man was a passenger or crew member.
