Introduction
A 66-year-old female passenger was medically evacuated from Holland America Line’s ms Koningsdam cruise ship on November 29, 2024. The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the rescue operation, which took place approximately 280 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico maritime boundary.
Details of the Incident
The ship’s crew requested assistance after the passenger exhibited symptoms consistent with a stroke. The Coast Guard responded by deploying two aircrews, one from San Diego and another from Sacramento. The teams successfully hoisted the passenger from the ship and transported her to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in San Diego, where she arrived in stable condition.
Operational Context
The ms Koningsdam was on a 14-day “Classic California Coast Baja Peninsula” cruise, roundtrip from San Diego, at the time of the incident. The Coast Guard highlighted the successful coordination between the command center, the aircrews, and the ship’s crew in ensuring the passenger’s swift and safe evacuation.
