Introduction
An overboard emergency aboard AIDAnova in the Baltic Sea on July 16, 2025, ended with the successful recovery of an 18-year-old passenger. The individual was rescued alive after going into the water in the early morning hours while the vessel was en route to Copenhagen.

Details of the Incident

Man Overboard Alert:

  • The “man overboard” alarm was sounded at approximately 02:00 local time.
  • Wind conditions were recorded at force six as the vessel, carrying about 6,600 passengers and crew, immediately reduced speed.
  • The ship’s master coordinated search procedures, requesting balcony cabin passengers to illuminate the water using their mobile phone torches to aid visibility.

Rescue Operations:

  • Ship’s rescue boats deployed and used searchlights to sweep the area.
  • The passenger was spotted through the combined vigilance of crew and guests.
  • He was retrieved from the water in a responsive state and brought back aboard for medical treatment.

Post-Rescue Procedures:

  • A full muster and headcount confirmed all persons accounted for by 04:00.
  • Once the situation was resolved, AIDAnova resumed its scheduled voyage toward Copenhagen.
