Generally, laws exist to keep people safe and maintain order in a country. But what about when some laws are too ridiculous to fathom?

Some laws that exist are quite strange and bordering on insanity.

In Canada, 35% or one out of every five songs played on radio stations must be by Canadian artists.

France has a similar rule, between the hours of 8:00am and 8:00pm, 70% of music on the radio must be played by French artists.

As for Spanish drivers, driving in thongs is forbidden and  in Scandinavia, headlights must be used at all times even during the day.

In Singapore, it is illegal to drop, sell or chew gum unless it is medicinal.

Visiting Greece ladies?  Do not wear high heels in historic sites such as the Acropolis or the Parthenon as they could damage the ancient ruins.

In Thailand, it is a criminal offence to step on currency as it contains images of the King.  It is also against the law to insult the Queen.

Durian fruit is extremely popular in Asia but due to the unpleasant aroma, it has been banned from buses, subways, hotels and airports in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

In Hong Kong, there’s a law that allows a wife to kill her husband if she finds him cheating. However, she must kill him with her bare hands.

The Swiss are known for their impeccable cleanliness and order.  Despite this, there are some apartment blocks in Switzerland that forbid the flushing of toilets after 10:00pm.  The reason, residents find it too noisy.

In Saudi Arabia, it is illegal for any woman to drive a car.

The French are known for their impeccable sense of style and beauty despite consuming chocolate croissants and pastries.  French advertisements featuring products containing salt or sugar must legally include exercise and eating five fruit and vegetables in its advertising.

In the USA, many strange laws exist including: In Tennessee, sharing your Netflix password is illegal while in Virginia, children are not allowed to go trick-or-treating on Halloween.

In Illinois, it is legal for a minor to drink provided they are enrolled in a culinary course.

In Mobile, Alabama, it is against the law to throw confetti or spray silly string.

As society evolves, children’s names also evolve.  Some children’s names are just inappropriate and offensive.

The Victorian Government released a list of names that they banned including Anzac, Bishop, Brother, Christ, Commodore, Dame, Duke, Honour, Justice, Messiah, Prince, Queen, Saint, Sister and more.

Regardless of your views, ensure you have a good understanding of laws, customs and social etiquette when you visit another country.
