Circumstances:

On May 17, 2025, a DJI Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) was conducting aerial survey operations approximately 17.6 kilometers northwest of Sydney Airport in New South Wales, Australia. During the manoeuvring phase of the flight, the aircraft experienced a propeller failure, resulting in a loss of control.

The RPAS subsequently collided with a building, causing its complete destruction. No injuries or fatalities were reported as the aircraft was unmanned. Emergency services were not required at the scene, but the incident has prompted an investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

The ATSB will examine the cause of the propeller failure, including potential mechanical issues, maintenance history, and operational factors. Additionally, investigators will assess whether external factors, such as environmental conditions or interference, contributed to the accident.

This incident highlights the risks associated with operating remotely piloted aircraft systems, particularly in urban environments where buildings and infrastructure are present. It underscores the importance of rigorous pre-flight checks, adherence to operational guidelines, and ongoing advancements in RPAS safety technology.
