Circumstances:

An Ayres S2R-T Turbo Thrush agricultural aircraft was involved in an accident during take-off, approximately 75 kilometers from Geraldton Aerodrome in Western Australia. The pilot lost directional control during the take-off run, causing the aircraft to veer off the runway and enter a ground loop.

During the ground loop, the aircraft’s right wing and rudder struck the ground, resulting in substantial damage. Fortunately, the pilot was unharmed in the incident.

The ATSB is investigating the accident to determine the factors that contributed to the loss of directional control during take-off. This will likely involve examining various aspects, including:

  • Environmental factors: Crosswinds, runway conditions (e.g., slippery surface), and other environmental factors that might have affected the aircraft’s handling.
  • Aircraft factors: Any potential mechanical malfunctions or maintenance issues that could have contributed to the loss of control.
  • Pilot factors: Pilot experience and decision-making during the take-off.

This incident highlights the challenges and risks associated with agricultural aviation, particularly during take-off and landing phases, which often occur on unpaved or less-maintained airstrips.
