Circumstances:

A Sling 2 light aircraft, operated by GoFly Aviation, conducted a precautionary landing on Bulcock Beach in Caloundra, Queensland, following a reported loss of engine power. The aircraft was engaged in circuit training with a student pilot and instructor on board when the incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Caloundra Airport.

The flight instructor, demonstrating exceptional airmanship, chose to make a precautionary landing on the beach rather than risk a potential return to the airport. This decision was made to ensure the safety of both the occupants and those on the ground, prioritizing a controlled landing in a clear area over a potentially risky return to the airfield with reduced engine power.

The landing was executed successfully with no injuries to the instructor or student and no damage to the aircraft. The owner of GoFly Aviation, who witnessed the incident from the air, described the landing as “picture perfect” and commended the instructor’s skill and decision-making.

The aircraft’s engine will be thoroughly examined to determine the cause of the power loss. This incident underscores the importance of effective flight training and the critical role of pilot decision-making in ensuring safety during unexpected situations.
