Circumstances:
A Barrows Bearhawk Patrol aircraft crashed during take-off at Palmers Island/Yamba Airport (McIntyres Field) in New South Wales, resulting in the tragic death of the pilot and serious injuries to the passenger.
The aircraft was departing on a private flight to South Grafton Airport when the accident occurred. The pilot, a 67-year-old man and experienced aviator, lost control of the aircraft during the take-off run. The aircraft crashed just off the runway, and was destroyed.
Emergency services responded to the scene, but the pilot was pronounced dead. The passenger, the pilot’s son, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The cause of the accident is currently unknown and is being investigated by New South Wales Police. Witness accounts and any available recorded data will be crucial in determining the factors that contributed to this tragic event.
