Incident Overview
A family of five—including two young children and a grandmother—were injured after their car was allegedly hit by a stolen ute in a high-impact crash in Townsville. The family’s vehicle flipped onto its side and into a pole at the intersection of Chandler Street and Douglas Street in Garbutt around 6:13 pm on Monday, July 14, 2025. Neighbours rushed to help free the family from the wreckage. All five were transported to Townsville University Hospital in stable condition.

Emergency Response
Queensland Ambulance, police, and local residents responded rapidly. Bystanders, including neighbours and children, helped comfort the young girls and reportedly detained at least one of the alleged offenders until police arrived. Others from the stolen ute fled the scene on foot.
Investigation
Queensland Police have confirmed that the ute was allegedly stolen. Charges are expected to be laid. Investigators are focusing on:
- Recovery and identification of all individuals inside the allegedly stolen ute
- CCTV and eyewitness accounts from the crash scene
- Possible links to ongoing youth vehicle theft investigations in the region
A full forensic and criminal investigation is underway.

The crash has deeply affected the Garbutt community. Residents praised for their quick action and kindness, including one child who gifted a teddy bear to the injured girls, were highlighted in local media. The crash has reignited concerns about youth crime and vehicle theft in Townsville.
