Introduction
Krasnaya Kuznitsa, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), is on the verge of completing two Krasnaya Kuznitsa ferries designed for icebreaking river operations. These highly-anticipated vessels are set to revolutionize passenger and cargo transportation between Arkhangelsk and Onega, providing a dependable travel option in one of Russia’s most challenging maritime environments.

Details of the Incident
While the development itself is not an accident, the announcement was placed under the “Accidents” category to signify the significant undertaking required to replace older, repurposed tugboats. Construction commenced under a contract awarded in December 2021, supported by Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade. The new ferries—named Solvychegodsk and Onega—are the first in the Project REGK.126 series, featuring modern hull designs, robust ice reinforcements, and propulsion systems capable of maintaining a service speed of 12 knots (22 kmh). The vessels each measure 28 meters (93 ft) in length, 7 meters (22 ft) in beam, and feature a draught of 2.3 meters (7.5 ft).

Response and Impact
The shift from re-purposed tugboats to purpose-built Krasnaya Kuznitsa ferries demonstrates Russia’s commitment to modernizing its river transport infrastructure. By forgoing hovercraft in favor of displacement vessels, Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade aims to ensure consistent and efficient service even in harsh winter conditions. Local authorities in Arkhangelsk and Onega have expressed optimism that the new ferries will improve safety and reliability for passengers, cargo operators, and local communities. The first deliveries, scheduled for spring 2025, mark a substantial advancement in Russia’s northern river routes.
