Introduction
A construction worker has been injured after becoming trapped beneath falling concrete at a Gold Coast job site, triggering a large-scale emergency response. The incident occurred at a busy Southport worksite, with rescue crews working for nearly an hour to free the man.

Details of the Incident
Emergency services were called to a construction site on Minnie Street in Southport at about 12:15pm on Thursday, after reports that a worker had become trapped under concrete.

The man, aged in his 40s, was working on site when construction material and concrete is believed to have fallen from a crane, pinning him by the legs.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed three crews were dispatched to the scene.

Emergency Response
When paramedics arrived, the worker remained trapped beneath the rubble, with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews working alongside ambulance officers to extricate him.

A QAS spokesperson said the rescue was expected to be a “prolonged job” due to the nature of the entrapment.

The man was freed shortly after 1:00pm with the assistance of four fire and rescue crews.

At the time of writing, the extent of the worker’s injuries had not been confirmed.

Investigation and Next Steps
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has been contacted for comment and is expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the concrete fell and whether appropriate lifting and exclusion controls were in place.

Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.

Conclusion
The Southport incident adds to growing concerns around crane operations and falling-object risks on construction sites. As authorities assess the scene and the injured worker’s condition becomes clearer, the focus will turn to whether safety failures contributed to the near-fatal incident.
