Introduction
A man has died after a canoe overturned on a farm dam near Oberon in the NSW Central West, prompting an investigation by SafeWork NSW. The incident occurred early on Thursday morning as two men were working on the property.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were called to a rural property at Clover Hills, Jaunter, south of Oberon, at about 7:30am.
Police said two men were working on a dam using a canoe when it capsized. One of the men, believed to be in his 30s, managed to swim to shore and raise the alarm.
A search was launched by officers and State Emergency Service (SES) personnel, who recovered the body of the second man, aged 29, around 9:15am.
Regulatory Investigation
SafeWork NSW confirmed it was responding to the fatality and has begun inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“SafeWork NSW is making enquiries and will prepare a report for the coroner,” a spokesperson said.
Authorities will examine whether appropriate safety measures were in place for workers operating on or near water, including the use of flotation devices and safe vessel procedures.
Location and Context
The property where the accident occurred is located in a remote farming area south of Oberon, known for livestock and agricultural production. Rural worksites involving dams or water infrastructure are considered higher risk, particularly during maintenance or repair activities requiring boats or machinery.
Conclusion
The man’s death will be subject to a formal coronial investigation. SafeWork NSW’s findings will determine whether workplace safety laws were breached and what measures could prevent similar tragedies in rural work environments.
