Introduction
Bounce, a trampoline center in Geelong, Victoria, has been fined $40,000 following a distressing incident where an 11-year-old boy fell four meters from a climbing wall, resulting in significant injuries.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred in 2022 when the boy, alongside two friends, was racing to the top of the climbing wall. In the heat of the competition, the child failed to secure himself properly to the safety harness. Upon reaching the top and pushing off to descend, he fell to the ground instead of being lowered safely, suffering a fractured sternum and back injuries.
Legal and Safety Repercussions
Initially fined $12,500, the penalty was significantly increased to $40,000 upon appeal, reflecting the severity of the oversight and the need for stringent safety measures. The Geelong Magistrates’ Court found that Bounce had inadequately supervised the climbing area and failed to enforce proper safety briefings for its patrons.
Company Response and Adjustments
In response to the incident and the court’s ruling, Bounce has implemented additional safety protocols to prevent such accidents in the future. The company reaffirmed its commitment to safety, emphasizing that safeguarding patrons remains its utmost priority.
