Introduction

A tragic workplace accident has claimed the life of a 17-year-old New Zealand national on a farm in Western Australia, marking the fourth work-related fatality in the state in recent weeks.

Incident Details

The incident occurred just before 10:15 AM on Saturday at a sheep and wheat farm in Burakin, northeast of Perth. The young worker was struck by a loader and was declared dead at the scene, according to a spokesperson from the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS).

Official Response and Investigation

WorkSafe investigators were dispatched to the farm on Saturday to assess the scene and determine the cause of the accident. The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the circumstances leading to this fatal event and any contributing unsafe practices.

Community and Union Reactions

The death was highlighted during the Workers’ Memorial Day Service in Perth, where Minister for Training and Workforce Development, Simone McGurk, expressed profound regret over the loss of young lives on the job. Owen Whittle from Unions WA emphasized that the recent fatalities involved young men and unsafe work environments, indicating that these incidents were preventable.
