Introduction

A warehouse worker in Melbourne suffered severe injuries after being crushed by a one-tonne pallet in a conveyor belt incident, highlighting significant safety failures.

Details of the Incident

At Newcold Melbourne No.2’s Truganina warehouse, a worker attempting to clear a pedestrian crossover obstructed by a pallet was injured when the automated conveyor belt unexpectedly activated. This movement caused the worker’s foot to slip into an opening between rollers, resulting in his leg being crushed by the pallet.

Company’s Safety Lapses and Legal Obligations

WorkSafe Victoria identified that the company failed to implement necessary safety measures such as warning systems, alarms at pedestrian crossings, or adequate training for safely crossing the conveyor belt. The lack of direct supervision to ensure adherence to safety protocols was also noted.

Enforcement and Remedial Actions

Following the incident, Newcold entered into an enforceable undertaking with WorkSafe, committing over $293,000 towards safety improvements, including installing secured access gates at crossing points. This action comes as an alternative to facing formal charges, with conditions that may lead to reinstating charges if breached.

WorkSafe’s Response

WorkSafe emphasized the critical nature of maintaining safety in high-risk environments like machinery operations. They advocate for stringent adherence to safety practices and the necessity of thorough training and supervision.
