Introduction
Queensland workplace safety authorities are investigating the death of a young man who was fatally injured after becoming trapped beneath heavy machinery at a remote outback worksite near Richmond. The incident has prompted a joint investigation by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and police.

Details of the Incident
Emergency services were called to a property along Richmond–Woolgar Road, approximately 500 kilometres west of Townsville, just before 12:00pm on Friday.

Paramedics arrived to find the young man trapped underneath heavy machinery in a critical, life-threatening condition. Despite urgent medical intervention, the man died at the scene before a rescue helicopter could arrive.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed crews assessed the man on site, but his injuries proved fatal.

Emergency Response
A Queensland Government rescue helicopter was dispatched to the remote location, reflecting the seriousness of the incident and the challenges posed by the site’s isolation. However, the man succumbed to his injuries prior to aerial evacuation.

Emergency crews remained at the scene as authorities secured the area and commenced preliminary inquiries.

Regulatory Investigation
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has confirmed it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatality, with assistance from Queensland Police.

Investigators will examine:

  • the type and condition of the machinery involved
  • how the worker became trapped
  • work procedures and supervision in place at the time
  • whether appropriate safety controls were implemented

Police will also prepare a report for the coroner as part of the formal process.

Conclusion
The death marks another tragic workplace fatality in regional Queensland, highlighting the heightened risks faced by workers operating heavy machinery in remote locations. As investigations continue, authorities will seek to determine whether the incident was preventable and whether safety failures contributed to the young man’s death.
