Introduction
A fatal worksite incident in Carlingford has left one construction worker dead and another fighting for life with devastating injuries. The collapse of concrete pumping equipment at a Meriton construction project has rocked the construction industry and prompted a full investigation by police and SafeWork NSW.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred around **9:00am on Tuesday, August 6**, at a Meriton site on **Pennant Hills Road**, near Shirley Street in Carlingford, Sydney’s northwest. Workers **Paulo Mau’u**, 40, and **Aymen Alahmad**, 30, were critically injured in the incident, believed to have involved a collapse or failure of concrete pumping equipment.
Paulo Mau’u was rushed to **Westmead Hospital** where he later died. Aymen Alahmad was transported to **Royal North Shore Hospital** and remains in a **critical condition**, reportedly **paralysed** with **punctured lungs** and awaiting a “very delicate” spinal operation.
Family Tributes and Fundraiser
Alahmad’s loved ones have launched a **GoFundMe** campaign to support his recovery and family. “Aymen is a devoted father to three young girls, a loving husband, and a son a mother relies on,” said close friend **Abdullah Malas**.
“Now it’s our turn to come together to support him. He’s always been the one to provide for his family—let us carry him through his hardest battle yet.”
Victim Remembered
Tributes have flooded in for Mau’u, who was described by friends as a proud Samoan who migrated to Australia from New Zealand. Loved ones shared memories on social media, saying:
“You never know when the last time you see someone is the last time… RIP ma uso.”
“You’ll forever be missed for your good vibes and energy.”
Company and Regulatory Response
**Meriton** released a statement expressing devastation over the incident:
“Our hearts go out to their families, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences and are fully cooperating with SafeWork NSW.”
Police have confirmed they are investigating, and the matter has been referred to **SafeWork NSW** for a full regulatory inquiry.
Previous Incident at Site
This is not the first safety scare at the Carlingford site. In **June**, the area was evacuated after a **crane became unstable** due to anchor pin failure. Roads were closed, and **350 workers and nearby residents were evacuated**. No injuries were reported in that incident.
Conclusion
As investigations continue, the Meriton worksite tragedy has reignited debate over construction safety standards and the dangers of concrete pumping operations. For now, one family grieves a devastating loss, while another holds vigil in hope of recovery.
