Details of the Incident
The incident occurred at Bowltiful, a noodle restaurant in Melbourne, in May 2023. A 31-year-old employee suffered a horrific injury while operating a dough mixer. His right hand was struck by a blade and subsequently pulled into the machine, resulting in the degloving of his skin.
Current Status and Company Response
Following the incident, WorkSafe Victoria inspected the site and discovered that the dough mixer lacked an essential safety feature: an interlock guard. This safety lapse allowed the machine to operate while its lid was open, posing a severe risk to workers. The restaurant was initially prohibited from using the mixer until the safety issue was resolved. However, further inspections revealed continued use of the mixer despite the ban, leading to increased fines and legal action.
Legal Proceedings and Outcome
MMPX Pty Ltd, trading as Bowltiful, faced charges in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court and was fined $40,000 without conviction on September 13, 2024. Additionally, the company was ordered to pay $5671 in costs. This legal action underscores the importance of adhering to safety regulations and the consequences of neglecting workplace safety standards.
