A tragic event at the St Ives gold mine in Widgiemooltha, near Kambalda, Western Australia, has resulted in the death of a 21-year-old worker, marking the second fatality at this location in just 18 months.
Incident Details
The young man died shortly before 3 PM on Tuesday. WorkSafe and police officials are currently at the site conducting an investigation into what is being treated as a workplace death.
Background and Response
This is not the first such incident at the St Ives operation; in October 2022, another worker, Terry Hogan, aged 37, also lost his life while working at the Hamlet underground mine, part of the same operation. Following the latest incident, mining operations have been suspended to ensure safety conditions.
