Introduction
The Express 5, currently the world’s largest fast ferry, collided with a breakwater while departing Ronne, Bornholm Island, Denmark, on November 25, 2024. The incident caused significant damage to the vessel’s hull, necessitating drydock repairs and leading to a temporary suspension of high-speed ferry services in the area.
Details of the Incident
As the Express 5 was departing Ronne harbor en route to Ystad, Sweden, it struck the inner breakwater, causing a noticeable crease along its starboard side. Passengers onboard reported hearing a loud noise at the time of impact. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The ferry returned to its berth for inspection, revealing extensive damage to the aluminum hull.
Operational Context
The Express 5 will require drydock repairs, leaving the route without high-speed ferry service, as the operator’s other fast ferry, Express 1, is also undergoing maintenance. Passengers are being accommodated on conventional ferries with longer travel times. This is the third such incident for the Express 5 since it entered service in 2023, raising concerns about navigational practices and harbor conditions.
