Introduction
The cruise vessel Vasco da Gama, operated by Nicko Cruises, has experienced a propulsion-related technical malfunction during an Atlantic passage, resulting in itinerary disruption and the cancellation of a scheduled voyage.

Details of the Incident

Technical Malfunction:

  • The issue affects the vessel’s starboard controllable pitch propeller system.
  • The ship remains operational but is sailing at reduced speed of below 12 knots.
  • Normal cruising speed for the vessel is reported at approximately 15–16 knots.

Current Voyage Status:

  • The vessel is currently sailing between Luanda and Praia (Cape Verde).
  • Arrival in Praia is expected on April 15, 2026.
  • Technical specialists and divers are scheduled to inspect the propulsion system upon arrival.

Operational Impact:

  • The planned turnaround port call at Málaga on April 17 will not be reached as scheduled.
  • A Western European relocation cruise (April 17 – May 1) has been cancelled.

Passenger Arrangements:

  • Passengers currently onboard will disembark early in Cape Verde.
  • Partial refunds have been offered as compensation.
  • Guests with flights booked through Nicko Cruises will be transported via charter service to Frankfurt.
  • Passengers with independent travel arrangements may need to organise return travel separately.

Company Response:

  • Nicko Cruises confirmed that the issue does not affect the vessel’s safety.
  • Further decisions regarding itinerary adjustments will follow a full technical assessment.

Future Deployment:

  • The vessel is expected to resume its Northern European summer programme, subject to completion of repairs.
  • Full operational capability will be verified following inspection and maintenance work.
