Introduction A 63-year-old male passenger was urgently evacuated from the Grand Princess cruise ship by the US Coast Guard due to severe abdominal distress. The operation took place approximately 170 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, showcasing the critical response capabilities of the Coast Guard in emergency medical situations.

Details of the Incident The medevac was initiated in the early hours of October 12 after the cruise ship reported the medical emergency while more than 1000 miles from San Diego. The ship navigated closer to the coast to meet the operational range of the Coast Guard’s Sikorsky MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter, which successfully completed the evacuation by the afternoon of October 13.

Medical Response and Coordination Due to the significant distance from shore, the Eleventh Coast Guard District implemented a scheduled communication protocol, maintaining hourly updates. A Jayhawk helicopter, accompanied by an Alenia C-27 Spartan for aerial surveillance, conducted the rescue once the ship was within range. The passenger was transported to shore and received by medical personnel, walking with assistance to the awaiting ambulance.
