Introduction
A distressing incident occurred on the Norwegian Spirit cruise ship when a Taiwanese passenger tragically fell overboard. The event, which took place on August 8, was witnessed by a family aboard the ship, heightening the shock and urgency of the moment.
Details of the Incident
The passenger, a 30-year-old Taiwanese national known only by his surname Li, fell from the top deck of the Norwegian Spirit. The fall was witnessed by a couple and their child, who were gazing out at the sea when they shockingly saw Li plummet past them. The family quickly alerted the crew, prompting an immediate halt to the ship and a search and rescue operation.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Despite the rapid response, the search ended tragically when Li’s body was recovered approximately 40 minutes after the fall. The incident unfolded around 11:00 a.m. as the ship was navigating its return route to Taiwan. Li was traveling with his brother on a 6-day itinerary from Keelung Port, with stops in Nagasaki, Japan, and Jeju Island, South Korea. Following the recovery, Li’s body was stored in a shipboard freezer until the vessel could dock back at Keelung Port.
Investigation and Follow-up
Investigators have boarded the Norwegian Spirit to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Li’s fatal fall. The ongoing investigation seeks to determine whether there were any contributing factors or negligence involved in the incident.
