Introduction
A crew member was reported overboard from Norwegian Breakaway while the ship was sailing from Bermuda toward Boston on April 26, 2026. The United States Coast Guard later suspended the search after an extended multi-agency response.
What Happened
The incident was reported at approximately 1:15 a.m. while the vessel was about 12 miles east of Wellfleet, off Cape Cod. Onboard security systems reportedly captured the person falling from the vessel, after which the ship altered course toward the last known position.
Response and Investigation
Norwegian Cruise Line notified the relevant rescue coordination centre and the crew deployed lifesaving equipment and a rescue craft. Coast Guard aircraft, a helicopter and surface personnel joined the search. The circumstances of the fall remained undetermined, and the crew member was not publicly identified in the initial reports.
- The Coast Guard assumed operational control of the search after the ship notified authorities.
- Norwegian Breakaway was permitted to continue toward Boston after the search was suspended.
- The delayed arrival affected embarkation arrangements for the vessel’s next sailing.
