Introduction
Royal Caribbean International has confirmed that its Quantum-class cruise ship Anthem of the Seas has returned to Sydney, NSW, after experiencing a technical fault affecting the vessel’s propulsion system. The issue has resulted in the cancellation of the ship’s next scheduled sailing while corrective maintenance is carried out.

Details of the Propulsion Issue

Incident at Sea:

  • Passengers on the current voyage reported a period of reduced propulsion power, during which the ship temporarily slowed significantly and briefly came to a halt in open waters.
  • Following the fault, Anthem of the Seas proceeded back toward Sydney at reduced speed.
  • Royal Caribbean later confirmed that the problem involved the ship’s propulsion system, understood to include the electrically driven azipod units.

Return to Port and Maintenance:

  • The vessel returned to its homeport in Sydney to allow for full inspection and repair.
  • RCI determined that the required maintenance could not be completed within the turnaround window.
  • As a result, the ship’s scheduled January 27, 2026 departure has been withdrawn from service.

Canceled Sailing and Guest Impact:

  • The affected cruise was a 10-night New Zealand itinerary departing from Sydney.
  • Guests booked on the canceled voyage were notified directly by Royal Caribbean.
  • RCI confirmed that all impacted guests will receive:
    • Full refund of cruise fare, taxes, and fees
    • Refund of pre-purchased packages, gratuities, and shore excursions
    • A future cruise credit
    • Reimbursement for certain non-refundable travel expenses not otherwise recoverable

Operational Context:

  • Anthem of the Seas, inaugurated in 2015, has a maximum capacity of approximately 4,905 passengers.
  • Royal Caribbean stated that continuing to operate the ship under propulsion constraints was not appropriate.
  • The decision reflects standard maritime practice when critical propulsion components require extended in-port maintenance.

Company Statement:

  • Royal Caribbean emphasized that safety and vessel reliability remain its top priorities.
  • The line stated it is working to complete repairs efficiently and will advise guests once the ship is cleared to resume service.
