The Interislander ferry Kaitaki encountered rough seas during a crossing from Wellington to Picton, New Zealand, on December 27th, 2024. The rough conditions caused several vehicles to shift and sustain damage, and one passenger received a minor injury.
The incident occurred near Karori Lighthouse as the ferry was navigating through heavy swells. The movement caused some passenger vehicles to break free and collide with each other or other objects on the car deck, resulting in damage. The injured passenger received immediate medical assistance from the ferry’s crew.
Interislander is providing support to affected customers and conducting a thorough assessment of the damage. The company has also issued guidance to passengers on managing seasickness, as adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, are affecting the region.
