Introduction
Radiance Of The Seas encountered a propulsion issue during its repositioning voyage from California to Alaska, leading to significant itinerary adjustments and cancellations. The problem, identified in one of the ship’s Azipod units, resulted in reduced maximum speed and impacted the ship’s ability to maintain its schedule.
Details of the Incident
On April 24, 2024, during the journey from Los Angeles to Vancouver, technical difficulties forced the cancellation of scheduled port calls in Astoria, Oregon, and Victoria, British Columbia. Passengers were compensated with a 50% refund of their cruise fare in onboard credit (OBC) and full refunds for pre-paid shore excursions in the affected ports. Despite attempts to rectify the issue mid-voyage, further repairs necessitated extended docking in Vancouver, leading to additional disruptions.
Operational Context
The initial 7-day Alaska itinerary was modified to exclude Juneau and Hubbard Glacier, shortening the cruise and adding extra days in Vancouver. Subsequently, the repair delays prompted the last-minute cancellation of the next scheduled voyage, affecting passengers already onboard. Comprehensive compensation packages were offered, including full refunds, future cruise credits, complimentary services, and assistance with travel adjustments. The extensive response aimed to mitigate passenger inconvenience while necessary technical repairs were completed.
