Introduction
In the early morning hours of June 6, 2024, a tragic incident occurred aboard MSC Euribia when a male passenger went overboard in Norway’s Sognefjorden. A swift response by the Norwegian Coast Guard resulted in the recovery of the passenger, but unfortunately, he was later pronounced deceased.
Details of the Incident
The incident took place at approximately 1:30 a.m. while MSC Euribia was en route to Flåm, Norway. The ship’s “man overboard” alarm was sounded around 2:15 a.m., prompting a rapid response from the Norwegian Coast Guard. Rescue vessels and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene, and the ship itself deployed a rescue boat. The passenger’s body was located at a depth of over 4,300 feet around 3 a.m. and airlifted to Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, where he was pronounced dead.
Operational Context
The incident occurred during MSC Euribia’s 7-day “Northern Europe Cruise” itinerary, which included stops in Denmark and Norway. The circumstances surrounding the overboard incident are under investigation by local police, who have classified it as a “suspicious death.” Despite the tragedy, the cruise continued as planned, with no changes to the itinerary.
