Introduction

On September 4, 2023, a 26-year-old male passenger, Kevin McGrath, was reported missing after the Carnival Conquest docked at PortMiami. McGrath, a U.S. Army veteran and father of two, was part of a family group celebrating their father’s 60th birthday on the cruise.

Details of the Incident

The incident came to light when Kevin McGrath’s family, who were traveling with him, could not find him on the ship. His identification documents were in the possession of his mother, implying that he did not disembark through standard procedures. Further, no CCTV footage from the ship or the port showed him leaving. An immediate search operation was initiated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), scouring the waters off PortMiami and along South Florida’s coast.

Operational Context

The incident occurred at the conclusion of Carnival Conquest’s 3-day “Bahamas Cruise,” which started on September 1, 2023, and ended on September 4, 2023, after docking at PortMiami. The cruise visited North Bimini as a part of its itinerary.
