Introduction
In a tragic event on December 30, 2023, a 32-year-old male passenger, Carlos Alberto Mota Candreva, went overboard from MSC Preziosa while the ship was en route from Port Santos/Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Angra dos Reis. The incident, reportedly occurring after an argument with his girlfriend, led to an extensive search and rescue operation involving the ship’s crew, the Brazilian Coast Guard, and the Brazilian Navy.
Details of the Incident
The overboard incident happened around 12:30 AM local time (12:30 AM UTC). MSC announced that Candreva intentionally jumped overboard from his cabin’s balcony. Following the incident, MSC Preziosa deployed two rescue boats and commenced a search and rescue operation. The Brazilian Coast Guard and Navy joined the efforts. After approximately two hours of searching, the ship was released to continue its voyage. Unfortunately, Candreva’s body was not found.

This incident took place at the beginning of MSC Preziosa’s 5-day “New Year’s Eve Cruise South America,” which started on December 29 and was scheduled to return on January 2. The itinerary included visits to Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, and Buzios. The event cast a somber tone over the holiday cruise, highlighting the critical need for safety and vigilance on board.
