Introduction
More than 100 passengers have filed compensation claims against P&O Cruises following multiple norovirus outbreaks on the Ventura cruise ship between April and June 2024. The legal action, brought forth by Hudgell Solicitors, highlights the impact of the outbreaks on passengers’ health and enjoyment of their cruises.
Details of the Incident
The claims stem from several norovirus outbreaks on the Ventura, with a significant incident occurring in May during a 2-week Canary Islands cruise. Over 500 passengers reported symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, which P&O confirmed as norovirus. Earlier sailings in April also saw a high number of passengers falling ill.
Operational Context
P&O implemented various measures to control the outbreaks, including closing self-service buffets, shutting down onboard launderettes, deep-cleaning the vessel, and isolating symptomatic passengers. However, the legal claims allege that P&O downplayed the severity of the outbreaks.
The passengers are seeking compensation for illness, loss of enjoyment, and associated expenses. P&O has apologized and stated it will respond to the claims in due course.
