A tragic event unfolded aboard the Norwegian Spirit on August 8, 2024, when a 30-year-old Taiwanese passenger fell overboard, leading to his untimely death. This incident, captured on video and witnessed by a family, has prompted a thorough investigation.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred around 11 AM Taiwan time as the Norwegian Spirit neared the end of a 6-day Japan and Korea Cruise. The passenger, surnamed Li, tragically lost his footing and fell from an upper deck, an event observed by nearby passengers and captured on video. Despite immediate search and rescue efforts by the ship’s crew, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, Li’s life could not be saved.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Following the fall, the ship halted and conducted a focused search and rescue operation, recovering Li’s body shortly thereafter. His body was stored in a shipboard freezer until the vessel could dock at Keelung Port. Taiwanese authorities, including local police, boarded the ship to launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
