Introduction
During the busy rush hour commute on Tuesday evening, August 27, a fire in the engine room of the NY Waterway ferry Father Mychal Judge necessitated the evacuation of dozens of passengers. This incident occurred as the ferry was navigating the Hudson River from Manhattan to New Jersey.
Details of the Incident
Witnesses observed flames aboard the vessel, and social media was quickly filled with images of thick gray smoke emanating from the ferry. The crew responded promptly, sealing the engine room and activating the vessel’s fire suppression systems, which effectively contained the blaze. All 37 passengers were safely transferred to the nearby NY Waterway ferry Frank Sinatra, which brought them ashore without any injuries.
Response and Aftermath
Following the evacuation, the Father Mychal Judge was towed to NY Waterway’s maintenance facility in New Jersey for repairs. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
