Introduction
A cruise terminal serving Costa Smeralda at Marseille Port was evacuated on May 3, 2026, after unattended baggage triggered a security alert.
What Happened
Two unattended backpacks were discovered in the terminal. Detection dogs reportedly indicated concern, prompting authorities to suspend embarkation and disembarkation while specialist units assessed the items. Passengers aboard the ship were kept informed by multilingual announcements, and there was no reported direct threat aboard the vessel.
Response and Investigation
French gendarmerie and fire services attended the terminal. Specialist teams examined and removed the bags and determined that the suspected explosive threat was unfounded. Shore access and normal operations gradually resumed, although some excursions and passenger movements were delayed.
- The ship was scheduled to continue to Barcelona as part of a Western Mediterranean itinerary.
- The incident involved the terminal rather than an onboard fire or explosion.
- No deaths or injuries were reported.
