On April 21, 2024, a critical medical evacuation was performed for a male crew member aboard Pacific Adventure, approximately 23 miles east of Newcastle, NSW, shortly after the ship’s departure from Sydney.

Details of the Incident

The medevac was urgently required due to a severe medical condition experienced by the crew member. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, operating from Lake Macquarie Airport in Newcastle, swiftly responded. The operation included a critical care paramedic from NSW Ambulance and a doctor from NSW Health, who stabilized the patient before he was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

Operational Context

This emergency occurred at the start of a 4-day Tasmania Cruise, which was scheduled to visit Hobart. The quick and efficient coordination between the cruise ship staff, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, and local health services ensured the crew member received the necessary medical care promptly, illustrating the importance of emergency preparedness and response in maritime settings.
