Introduction
A passenger medical emergency prompted the Caribbean Princess, operated by Princess Cruises, to divert its course and come to a halt near the Isle of Wight. This incident occurred on the evening of August 13, 2024, as the ship was en route to Iceland.
Details of the Incident
The medical emergency unfolded shortly after the ship’s departure from Southampton, UK. At around 6:00 p.m., the vessel stopped off the coast near Ryde, Isle of Wight, to facilitate a medical evacuation. Rescue efforts involved a Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent and the Sandown Lifeboat, which coordinated to provide immediate assistance.
Response and Rescue Efforts
Witnesses observed the helicopter circling overhead before landing on the ship to attend to the unwell passenger. The coordination between the ship’s crew and local rescue services ensured that the passenger received prompt care, illustrating the effectiveness of emergency protocols at sea.
Aftermath and Vessel Status
Following the incident, the Caribbean Princess was anchored off the coast of Falmouth, Cornwall, by the morning of August 14. The ship remained there temporarily as it prepared to continue its journey towards Iceland. This event marks another instance in a series of medical emergencies that have necessitated similar diversions by Princess Cruises’ vessels.
