Introduction
On April 15, 2024, Celestyal Journey experienced an allision with a pier in Port Kusadasi during its berthing maneuver. The incident, which occurred around noon, was attributed to excessive speed as the ship approached the dock.
Details of the Incident
While attempting to dock, the ship’s crew engaged the anchor in an effort to decelerate, but the vessel failed to slow down sufficiently. As a result, the bow bulb of Celestyal Journey made contact with the concrete pier structure. Fortunately, the allision did not result in any injuries, water ingress, or pollution, and the damage to both the ship and the pier was minor.
Operational Context
This event occurred at the start of a 7-day “Idyllic Aegean Cruise,” which had just begun its journey from Piraeus-Athens and was set to visit several prominent Greek islands and cities. Despite the incident, the cruise schedule continued as planned, with the ship making its subsequent ports of call without further issue.
