After diverting to and landing at Sydney on runway 16 left, the crew of Boeing 737 VH-IXJ, operating Virgin Australia flight VA1589 from Melbourne to Newcastle, taxied north along taxiway B. Air traffic control instructed the crew to give way to another Boeing 737 vacating the runway, but the instruction was not read back and the incorrect readback was not identified. The crews observed the developing conflict, stopped the aircraft and clarified the taxiing sequence.
