Circumstances:

The aircraft was participating in a private formation activity involving four aircraft belonging to the Freedom Formation Display Team. While operating in the vicinity of Wedderburn Airport, two of the Van’s RV-7 aircraft made contact in flight.

One of the aircraft, VH-EWS, subsequently descended into nearby forested terrain. Emergency services located the wreckage near Wedderburn Airport. The aircraft was destroyed by the impact, and the sole pilot, who was also the owner and builder, was fatally injured.

The second RV-7 involved in the mid-air collision was able to return to the airfield and land safely. No additional injuries were reported. Authorities secured the area while the ATSB commenced initial assessment activities.
