Circumstances:
Jetstar Airways flight JQ27, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, experienced a tire damage incident during take-off from Sydney Airport. The aircraft was bound for Phuket, Thailand, when the incident occurred.
Shortly after becoming airborne, the crew detected a problem with one of the aircraft’s ten tires. While initial reports suggested a possible tire burst, the airline later clarified that the tire was damaged but did not burst.
As a precautionary measure, the pilots decided to return to Sydney Airport. To ensure a safe landing, the aircraft entered a holding pattern to burn fuel and reduce weight. During this time, the aircraft circled near Richmond in northwest Sydney before positioning for landing.
The airport closed the main runway for 30 minutes to facilitate the aircraft’s safe return. The Boeing 787 landed without further incident, and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.
Engineers are inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause of the tire damage. The incident caused delays to other flights, but normal operations resumed after the runway reopened.
