Circumstances:

During the cruise phase of the private flight from Mount Surprise to Chillagoe, the pilot detected an airframe vibration and noted an abnormal rotor RPM indication. In response, the pilot initiated an autorotation and prepared for a forced landing.

The helicopter subsequently descended and collided with terrain. After the landing, the pilot observed a rotor belt on the ground. A post-impact fire developed, resulting in the destruction of the Robinson R22.

The ATSB received notification of the accident and recorded the occurrence as part of its air safety investigations.
