Circumstances:
On 17 August 2026, Qantas flight QF420, operated by Boeing 737 VH-VZV, was vacating runway 16 right at taxiway B8 after landing at Sydney Airport. A Virgin Australia Boeing 737, VH-IXJ, was taxiing north on taxiway B after diverting to Sydney. The ATSB reports that air traffic control had instructed the Virgin crew to follow the Qantas aircraft, but that part of the clearance was not read back and the incomplete readback was not identified. The Qantas crew saw the Virgin aircraft approaching from the right, stopped and clarified the taxiing sequence. The ATSB records no injuries or aircraft damage and is investigating the incident.
