Circumstances:

A Fly Synthesis Texan 600 aircraft experienced a precautionary landing incident at Ararat Airport after an engine failure during a training flight. The pilot was conducting circuits at Ararat as part of a navigation exercise that originated from Ballarat Airport and included a planned route to Maryborough and back to Ballarat.

During the third circuit at Ararat, the engine stopped at approximately 300 feet above ground level while the aircraft was climbing out. Faced with this engine failure, the pilot made the decision to turn and attempt a landing on the crosswind runway 04. However, the landing was harder than intended, and the aircraft flipped over.

Despite the unexpected incident and the aircraft flipping, the pilot was unharmed. The aircraft sustained minor damage.

The incident highlights the importance of effective decision-making and piloting skills in handling engine failures, even during seemingly routine training flights. The pilot’s ability to maintain control of the aircraft and execute a precautionary landing, even though it resulted in the aircraft flipping, prevented any injuries.
