Circumstances:

On 20th October 2023, while landing at Quilpie Airport approximately 20 minutes before sunset, a Pipistrel Sinus Flex aircraft drifted off the designated runway path due to poor visibility caused by the sun’s position. After a satisfactory touchdown and covering a distance of about 200 meters, the aircraft drifted left, leading to a propeller strike. The pilot, unsure about the exact cause of the strike—whether it was a runway light (none were found broken) or an issue during braking—later confirmed damage to the propeller. Upon inspecting the runway, the pilot discovered the separated propeller blade tips, with one lying on the left side of the runway and the other slightly off it, coinciding with the point where the aircraft vibration had been initially felt.
